Shoes of Hope

Back-to-school essentials for children in foster and kinship care each year.

What it is

Each year, Shoes of Hope helps children in foster and kinship care start the school year feeling
seen, valued, and loved. Every registered child receives new shoes, a backpack, socks, and
underwear. Before receiving their new shoes, each child is offered a foot washing as a meaningful
act of love, dignity, and care. They also get to choose the pair of shoes they love most, giving
them confidence and ownership as they begin a new school year.

Why it matters

At the heart of the program is choice. Children aren't handed a pre-filled bag — they get to
browse, try on shoes, and choose the pair they love. That simple act of choosing gives children a
sense of confidence and ownership. A child who starts the school year feeling empowered walks
through those school doors a little differently.
