Phil Welch lives in Gastonia with his wife, Cindy, and is a proud father of three and grandfather of seven. A lifelong member of Calvary Baptist Church, where he serves as a Deacon. He has remained deeply rooted in civic service throughout his decades-long career.

A Gastonia native, Phil has dedicated his career to protecting the community he calls home. He has served as the Fire Chief of the Gastonia Fire Department for over 17 years, leading a team of 145 full-time personnel across eight stations. Chief Welch is a graduate of the National Fire Academy’s Executive Fire Officer program and has held numerous statewide leadership roles, including President of the North Carolina State Firemen’s Association, and decades on the NC State Fire Commission. Chief Welch officially retired on May 1, 2026, and is looking forward to a slower pace and more time with his family and growing grandchildren.

Phil has been a dedicated advocate for Least of These Carolinas for over a decade. He believes in their commitment to improving the lives of foster children.
